Walnut Hills opened the season against a strong Withrow squad falling 45-7. Junior quarterback TJ Nelson is a prospect to watch after throwing for 1,481 yards, eight touchdowns, and rushing for 503 yards and nine scores on a team that finished 2-9 a season ago.
Last week, Nelson was 11-of-21 for 106 yards and a touchdown and rushed for a team-leading 57 yards on eight carries. However, he also threw two interceptions and fumbled twice in the loss.
His main target was Isreal Bradford, with three receptions for 60 yards, while Jack Sammarco was on the receiving end of his touchdown throw.
Makan Sacko and Alex Milov each posted eight tackles on defense.
One of the players expected to be a significant contributor on both sides of the ball was Javion Bostic. However, Bostic announced the other week he’d transferred to Winton Woods.
If the Eagles thought Week One was rough, Week Two could prove to be even worse with one of the most talented teams in Ohio headed their way.
Winton Woods head coach Chad Murphy guided his squad to a state championship last season, and many feel the Warriors have the talent to make a return trip.
In Week One, Murphy saw his team post 376 yards of offense against Trotwood-Madison in a 39-16 win. Junior quarterback Vance George was 13-of-19 for 187 yards and three touchdowns, with three receivers posting 40-yards or more in receiving and James Minor III rushing for 95 yards and a touchdown.
Don’t be surprised if senior KC Spears explodes this week for a big game after pulling down five receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown last week.
The defense is loaded with Ohio State pledge Jermaine Mathews and Cincinnati pledge Cameron Calhoun. Twenty-one players posted a tackle last week in the win.
On paper, you expect this game could get out of hand as Coach Murphy looks for his team’s 11th consecutive win going back to last season. The last time Winton Woods lost a game was in October against Anderson last season; they beat Walnut Hills 21-0.
